I just got back from playing in Atlanta where I witnessed true unity in Deep House. Even in the largest American cities, it can still be very difficult to throw successful Deep House events. There are simply not enough fans to go around for several events on any given night. We’re all getting older and not enough potential, young fans are finding us. Atlanta is a smaller city than Chicago, New York and L.A. and they don’t have as many large scale Deep House events. However, once a month Stan Zeff throws an event called “Tambor” featuring some of the best producers/djs around today and people just seem to come together to support this special night by collectively creating an enormous amount of anticipation. There are talented DJs across the globe and Chicago certainly has no shortage. However, in today’s market it takes a lot more than talent to stand out. I can’t tell you how many DJs have come up to me over the years saying; “When are you going to put me on.” My answer; “What are you going to bring to the event?” They then say “I’m gonna rock the party!” I respond; “and what else?” Then they often look puzzled and reply “What do you mean?” And that is the problem. For those who live smaller cities where House is not as prevalent and has little to no air play, it is very difficult to not only find DJ gigs, but to even get away with playing any House at all. I’ve been asked to write about how to find key contacts in the “scene.” This is subjective to your region and style of music that you’re looking to spin. It may be easier in some areas than in others. However, I assume that most DJs know and support their local scene. An aspiring DJ should be doing this already or their chances of landing gigs will be considerably low. (more…)
